My Guitar Journey

My Guitar Journey

Introduction & Early Years

My path to classical guitar was anything but traditional. As a mostly self-taught musician, I relied on determination, countless hours of exploration, and a deep passion for the instrument. I picked up my first guitar at age 10, learning by ear from live performances and television, since digital resources were unavailable. Over time, I taught myself to sight-read and handwrite notation, with my earliest pieces being “Romance” and “Asturias” by Albeniz. Although my initial attempts were far from perfect, persistent study enabled me to eventually play these works as the composers intended.

As my skills grew, so did my desire to share music with others, leading me to my first experiences in group performance.

Band Experience

During my high school and college years, I served as lead and rhythm guitarist in a local rock band called “Minus Infinitee.” We performed current hits and original compositions at local concerts. Our original song, “Give me One More Chance,” was professionally recorded and reached the top of the charts on a local FM radio station. I played both rhythm and solo parts on electric guitar for this track. In addition to band performances, I frequently accompanied solo singers on stage with acoustic guitar and continued to showcase classical repertoire at various concert venues.

While these collaborative experiences were invaluable, I soon felt the need to deepen my understanding of the guitar and refine my technique through formal study.

Formal Guitar Studies

Seeking to advance my skills, I pursued formal training with several distinguished guitarists, each contributing uniquely to my musical development:

  • Maestro Joseph Ishkanian: An inspiring teacher who recognized my potential early on and encouraged me to advance my studies. I still cherish his comprehensive method book and handwritten compositions. His legacy is honored in Classical Guitar Magazine’s remembrance article.
  • Maestro Elias Barreiro: I met Maestro Barreiro in New Orleans while beginning my doctorate at Tulane University. As a professor and author of numerous method books, he expanded my repertoire, improved my technique, and refined my musicality during our three years together. His journey from Cuba to becoming a respected artist is featured in a 2025 Bomb Magazine interview.
  • Thomas Coffey: As Director of Education for the Tampa Bay Area Guitar Society and former University of South Florida professor, Thomas Coffey broadened my musical horizons and provided valuable performance tips during my two years of study with him.
  • Jason Vieaux: Renowned for his precision and soulfulness, Jason Vieaux launched his online school in 2012. I joined to benefit from his artistry and experience, attending his concerts and meeting him in person at the Sarasota Guitar Society International Concert Series.
  • Dr. Simon Powis: Founder of Classical Guitar Corner (CGC), Dr. Powis offered a unique online learning experience. Over seven years, I participated in master classes, solo and ensemble performances, and annual summer school events, which were invaluable to my growth.
  • Dr. Daniel Nistico: Founder of the Creative Classical Guitarist (CCG) school, Dr. Nistico guided my exploration of composition. My first piece, “Transcendance,” received rave reviews and was performed by Dr. Nistico at concert events. I continue advanced studies in composition and repertoire development with him.

With each new mentor, my appreciation for the guitar deepened, and I became eager to learn from the world’s best through master classes and collaborations.

Master Classes & Collaborations

Learning never stops, and I have embraced every opportunity to expand my skills through master classes with world-class musicians:

  • Berta Rojas: The renowned Paraguayan classical guitarist led master classes I attended in 2019. I also worked with her for a week preparing for ensemble performances of works by Andrew York and Eric Satie.
  • João Luiz Rezende: A Grammy-nominated Brazilian guitarist and educator, João Luiz coached me on my original Choro-style composition “Midnight Swing” in a 2023 master class, offering insights to better reflect Brazilian musical traditions.
  • Raffaele & Janet Agostino: As part of Simon Powis’s summer school events, I collaborated with Duo Agostino in 2019 and 2023, performing in ensembles and orchestras across jazz, classical, and Renaissance genres. I also received master class instruction on Vals No. 4 by Agustin Barrios.

These enriching experiences not only shaped my musicianship but also inspired me to share my knowledge and passion with others.

Composing & Teaching Philosophy

My diverse experiences have shaped my teaching philosophy, especially for self-taught learners. I strive to help students overcome challenges, build confidence, and take ownership of their musical journey. Beyond performance, I compose and create virtuoso works that reflect my artistic vision.

Ultimately, my journey has led me to a clear mission—one that continues to guide my work as a musician and educator.
